Case History - Tejon Ranch
Situation
Tejon Ranch Company, California's largest land developer, hired Mercury
Group in August 1999 to create and implement a strategic communications
plan. Their opponent, wind energy giant Enron Wind Corporation, was
planning to build a massive wind farm on Tejon property. The proposed
site is home to the endangered California Condor, one of North America's
largest and rarest birds.
Solution
Mercury Group worked aggressively with the National Audubon Society
to roll out a coordinated public relations and legislative effort that
took the campaign from zero to 100 in a matter of days. Mercury Group
helped the National Audubon Society and Tejon Ranch respond quickly
to breaking events in the national news media and on Capitol Hill. National
Press attention was gained from National Public Radio, Fox News Channel,
The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The Washington Post,
The Houston Chronicle, and the AP and Dow Jones news wires.
Results
Through savvy public relations, provocative advertising, cutting-edge
Web site design and aggressive coalition-building, Mercury Group helped
Tejon defeat Enron Wind, reaching an agreement in November that specifically
states no wind farms on Tejon property ever.
